VoIP Providers Stand Behind ISPs, ESPs

A group of voice-over-Internet-protocol providers said it supports language that would specifically exempt Internet-service providers and enhanced-service providers in a rumored pending Federal Communications Commission decision on AT&T Corp.

The ex parte letter -- sent to the FCC by PointOne Inc. -- also wants the commission to recognize that some phone-to-phone services may indeed be information services.

“Businesses that have been built around the current ISP/ESP exemption are not asking for anything new with the proposed language, but to simply reaffirm that the rules around which they built their businesses continue to apply,” the group said in a prepared statement.

Along with PointOne, VoIP providers in the group are deltathree, ITXC Corp., M5 Networks Inc., USA Datanet, IceNet LLC and Red Gap Communications Inc.
