Voom Adds HBO, Cinemax

Chuck Dolan's Voom direct-broadcast satellite service has added four HDTV feeds from Home Box Office and Cinemax (East and West Coast, respectively), joining the 14 standard-definition channels it carries from the two premium networks.

Voom said it now carries 30 HDTV channels, including Discovery HD Theater, Showtime, Starz! and the 20 exclusive Voom channels from Rainbow Media Holdings Inc.

Voom also announced a deal to carry eight Turner Broadcasting System Inc. networks on its standard-definition lineup: Cable News Network, Turner Network Television, TBS Superstation, CNNfn, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, CNN Headline News and Turner Classic Movies.

The Rainbow DBS service now carries 70 standard-definition channels.

In other HDTV news, BigBand Networks Inc. said New Jersey cable operator Patriot Media is buying the company's "BigBand BMR" router for its HDTV rollout.

Patriot said it offers 10 HDTV channels to subscribers in the 31 communities it serves.
