An August pay-per-view rematch between Hasim Rahman and Lennox Lewis is in
jeopardy after the World Boxing Council said it would strip Rahman of the
heavyweight title if his next fight was against the former champion, sources
The WBC said Rahman must fight its No. 1 contender, Mike Tyson, before he has
a rematch with Lewis, or he will be stripped of the belt.
The decision was made after Tyson filed suit against the WBC Thursday in U.S.
District Court in New York to make the organization enforce its rule against
immediate rematches, according to the Associated Press.
Rahman won the WBC and International Boxing Federation heavyweight titles
April 21 with a fifth-round knockout of Lewis.
Representatives from TVKO, which would distribute a Rahman-Lewis rematch on
PPV, could not be reached for comment at press time.
