The Weather Channel acquired of the assets of Weather Bonk, a “mashup” Web site that incorporates user-generated and partner content overlaid on Google Maps, links to other weather sites, and current weather conditions and forecasts.
The deal also includes Golf Bonk and Ski Bonk, outdoor sports sites featuring mashups similar to those on WeatherBonk.com. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The Weather Channel said the acquisition is the first of others its interactive group is considering of companies that complement Weather.com’s core services. The programmer said future acquisition targets may include travel, health, recreation, sports, traffic and other local content, and “green living” sites.
