said it will acquire data networking firm
Adaptive Broadband Corp.

for about $645 million in stock, and said the combination would create a broadband-wireless powerhouse.

The companies, which build and market equipment for the fixed-wireless market, said the merger will allow them to achieve the scale needed to keep up with product demand, as well as bolster vendor service and support. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2001.
