White House Special Boosts HGTV

A detailed look at the White House dressed up in its holiday finest provided Home & Garden Television with the highest-rated hour in the network's history.

The Scripps Networks service earned a 1.9 rating (1.51 million households) from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 15 with its presentation of The White House Christmas 2002 special, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

The program boosted HGTV's primetime fortunes throughout the evening, as the network averaged a best-ever 1.4 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

"While other networks gave viewers a small glimpse of the White House holiday decorations, Home & Garden Television gave an in-depth, behind-the-scenes tour of the White House and the people who make the decorations happen," HGTV president Burton Jablin said in a prepared statement. "Our holiday coverage is always popular with the viewers, and our numbers reflect that."

The show will encore Dec. 20 at 10 p.m., Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. and three times Christmas Day: 1 p.m., 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
