Wink, DirecTV Part Ways

OpenTV Corp. announced Thursday that after DirecTV Inc.’s most recent earnings call, the direct-broadcast satellite provider notified it that it will sever its relationship with OpenTV subsidiary Wink Communications Inc. Dec. 22.

OpenTV said it will deactivate 10.4 million Wink-enabled set-tops at that time.

Revenue attributed to Wink boxes on DirecTV amounted to $1 million for the nine months ending Sept. 30, or 2% of OpenTV's revenue during that period.

"We were not prepared to renew our DirecTV agreement on terms that were neither economically viable nor in the long-term best interests of our company," OpenTV CEO James Ackerman said in a prepared statement.

OpenTV has a deal with EchoStar Communications Corp., and it provides software for Rupert Murdoch's British Sky Broadcasting Group plc platform.
