ESPN scored over 3.3 million viewers with its coverage of the U.S. women's national team's 3-1 win over France in the semifinals of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The telecast of the match, from Moenchengladbach, Germany on July 13, kicked off at noon (ET) and generated a 2.2 household rating, 2.57 million households and 3.35 million watchers on average, according to Nielsen data.
The match ranks as the most-watched FIFA Women'ws World Cup weekday match and fourth most-viewed ever. It was the second from Germany 2011 -- the U.S.'s stirring quarterfinal win on penalty kicks over Brazil on July 10 is third with 3.89 million viewers-- to score among the top five Women's World Cup telecasts. The other three are from 1999, when the tournament was held in the U.S., topped by the 11.4 rating and 17.98 million who watched the U.S. and Brandi Chastain's PK defeat of China in the final at the Rose Bowl.
Through July 13 and the tournament's first 30 matches, Women's World Cup 2011 averaged a 0.6 U.S. rating on ESPN and ESPN2 , up 200% from a 0.2 average during the 2007 competition from China. Household impressions rose 164% from 272,000 to 718,000, while soared 218% from 294,000 to 934,000.
The USA's semifinal win over France also delivered digitally, with 450,000 unique viewers on broadband service ESPN3.com. The match was the second-most-viewed non-2010 FIFA World Cup event behind the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, and the most ever for a women's sporting event on the network, according to Adobe Omniture data. The semifinals on Wednesday -- Japan beat Sweden 3-1 to advance to Sunday's final at 2 p.m. (ET)-- combined to deliver over half a million unique viewers on ESPN3.com.
Across ESPN3.com, ESPNnetworks.com and the WatchESPN app, the game logged a total of 25 million minutes consumed, ranking third overall for non-2010 FIFA World Cup events. Additionally, Gamecast for both semifinal matches generated 681,000 visits on ESPN.com and 478,000 visits on ESPN Mobile.
