Level 3 Communications Inc. signed a deal to provide backbone and colocation
services for Microsoft Corp.'s 'Xbox Live' broadband-gaming service, set to
launch this fall.
Level 3 will provide colocation, Internet-access and multiprotocol
label-switching services across its colocation facilities in 57 markets.
Level 3 provides various backbone and interconnection services for many cable
MSOs, including Cox Communications Inc. 'We're the primary transit provider of
IP packets to Cox,' vice president of commercial development Phil Jackson
Xbox broadband subscribers who use cable modems would play games across the
Level 3 backbone, which would interconnect gamers across the country or across
Jackson said using the Level 3 network would remove latency and cut down on
packet loss. 'We're pushing MPLS to the edge,' he added.
