Yankee Group Pegs Broadband Growth

Broadband subscribers will surpass narrowband subscribers by mid- to late 2006, according to a new study by The Yankee Group.

Yankee said broadband applications such as voice, games, photos and video streaming will drive broadband to 52 million homes by 2008, roughly double today's subscriber count.

Yankee also released a voice-over-Internet-protocol report concluding that MSOs will surpass alternative voice providers with the most VoIP subscribers in 2004.

Although the latter group, which includes Vonage Holdings Corp., will continue to grow, Yankee said, "We expect growth rates to decline as consumers set the option to purchase a primary-line-equivalent VoIP service."
