TOP PRIMETIME SHOWS:
THE SOUP, SOUP PRESENTS, ON E!, TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY, KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS, KENDRA, KOURTNEY AND KHLOE TAKE MIAMI, REALITY HELL
Even with the cluttered programming on cable on Sunday nights, E! is not afraid to air one of their best originals like KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS or THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR. Most of their schedule varies night by night, week to week. It is rather looked upon as if you are watching the brand, and not appointment viewing.
KOURTNEY & KLOE TAKE MIAMI premiered August 16th at 10pm
REALITY HELL premiered August 16th at 10:30pm
GIRLS NEXT DOOR premieres October 11th, 2009
Live Primetime Ratings Comparison:
August 2009 vs August 2008
Yearly % change*
*The Nielsen Company's National Television Audience Sample
Overall, Monday-Sunday primetime averages for ratings, share and delivery were up this month as compared to one year ago, August 2008. Share was up +17% and delivery was up +23%. Adults18-49 and 25-54 delivery were up +26% and +24%, respectively. Considering that two major programming notes in 2008 in August were the Beijing Olympics and Election coverage, E! has made notable gains in the demos, but more likely it is a result of new original programming. Signature programming such as TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY and ON E! were both up a significant +20% share. THE SOUP was up +13% and THS INVESTIGATES was up a whopping +40% from one year ago.
Comparing last month's primetime averages, both share and delivery were up. Overall delivery was up a modest +1%. But, both Friday and Saturday nights in particular did show significant growth with increases in delivery by as much as +15%. Adults 18-49 were up +18% and +22%, respectively.
This month kicked off with two brand new original series premieres. Sunday, August 16th was the premiere of KOURTNEY & KHLOE TAKE MIAMI at 10pm and REALITY HELL at 10:30pm. KOURTNEY & KHLOE, a spin-off series of KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS drew the second biggest audience in the network history. KOURTNEY & KHLOE set a record amongst Women 18-34, and interestingly outperformed the premiere episodes of KARDSHIANS. It was reported that this new show delivered more than six times as many viewers as the same time period a year ago. REALITY HELL which followed KOURTNEY & KHLOE averaged nearly 1.3 million viewers, almost triple the network's primetime viewing audience (E! network 8/17/09). And considering all the clutter and new premieres on cable in summertime, Sunday nights continue to be steadfast amongst the networks and the premiere destination night.
Additional programming that continue to be the staples for the channel include THE SOUP, TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY, and ON E! this month. THE SOUP was up +3% in delivery overall. TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY was down in the younger demos this month but was up with Adults 25-54. Over the last two months E! has been covering the life and death of Michael Jackson. Even though it has been over two months since the tragic passing of one of the the greatest pop culture figures, controversy surrounding his life and death continue to make major headlines. And at the end of this month there were a handful of Jackson specials that we will cover ratings on next month. On August 29th E! paid tribute to a full day of programming including specials Forbes Presents Michael Jackson: Where's the Money?. An E! News Special: The Death of Michael Jackson and Michael Jackson: An E! Entertainment Special.
Original series KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS was up +14% in delivery overall this month and continues to be one of the highest rated signature programs on the network. Original series KENDRA was up +11% share and delivery this month. KENDRA another spin-off series is dominating the ratings in primetime. Again this month it has beat out KARDASHIANS and is another notch on the belt for successful E! original series.
Additional programming notes for the month were GIRLS NEXT DOOR, DENISE RICHARDS: IT'S COMPLICATED and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE were off the air this month. GIRLS NEXT DOOR will premiere its new season in October.
The MOVIES WE LOVE franchise fell flat this month. Considering that the only movie shown this month was WAYNE'S WORLD, who can be surprised? Friday nights profiled THE COMEDIANS OF CHELSEA LATELY. A group of comedians who appear on a regular basis on her late night show have now been given a platform to present two entire showcases just for these stand-ups. We'll keep an eye out for this one to see if this new concept has the legs to stand on!!
And rounding out the month, are the classic tabloid-labeled specials, some franchises in their own right, that keep their viewers coming back month after month: 20 Hollywood Murders, 20 Best and Worst Plastic Surgery, 15 Acts of Violence, and 15 Unthinkable Crimes.
SEX AND THE CITY, HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU, and THE WOMEN. (Premieres July 2012. In addition sister network Style will have concurrent rights to all 3 titles.)
