OCTOBER 2008 PRIMETIME SCHEDULE

TOP PRIMETIME SHOWS:

OUTRAGEOUS PUMPKINS, HAUNTED GINGERBREAD HOUSES, SPOOKY CAKES-CANDY CO., DINERS, DRIVE-INS & DIVES, CEREAL BRIDGES, PAULA'S PARTY, FOOD NETWORK 4 PACK, BIG CITY CAKES, IRON CHEF AMERICA, ACE OF CAKES.

SCHEDULING STRATEGIES:

Food Network has an overall consistent schedule; the audience can be confident in the fact that the top shows for the most part will not be moved from their usual time slots.  The exceptions are marathon weeks where either one original show is aired repeatedly across the week, and theme weeks where special episodes of original series around one theme (Christmas, summer grilling, etc.).  Here are the consistencies in Food Network's schedule: GOOD EATS is stripped at 8pm Monday thru Thursday.  Monday is home to documentary series HOW'D THAT GET ON MY PLATE and UNWRAPPED.  Alton Brown's GOOD EATS gets an hour on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Guy Fieri owns the Monday 10pm hour with his DINERS, DRIVE-INS AND DIVES - one new episode, followed by a repeat.  ACE OF CAKES occupies the same spot on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and in both cases, it's a repeat episode followed by a premiere.  Saturdays are for the often-seasonal FOOD NETWORK SPECIALS, and Sunday is all about competitions: FOOD NETWORK CHALLENGE and IRON CHEF AMERICA.

YEAR AGO/BIG PICTURE:

Consistency in the schedule and performance are key ingredients for Food Network's continued success and growth.  ACE OF CAKES, DINERS, GOOD EATS, and DRIVE-INS & DIVES are performing well and showing year-to-year growth.  Five of seven nights are showing growth but there should be concern over Sundays (the highest rated night) which are showing double-digit percentage ratings declines.

OCTOBER 2008 PRIMETIME RATINGS ANALYSIS:

Food Network had a strong October showing a 10% Household increase, an 11% increase in P18-49 and 13% increase in P25-54.  DINERS, DRIVE-INS & DIVES and ACE OF CAKES consistently rate the highest every night they play.  THE CHEF JEFF PROJECT premiered in October with a decent first outing but faded in successive weeks from it strong IRON CHEF AMERICA lead-in.

Mondays are up 10% in Households and 3% in P25-54 over last year.  Guy Fieri makes the night, recording the highest ratings every week and always building from the UNWRAPPED lead-in.

Tuesdays were up 21% in Households and 29% in the P25-54 demo (61% in Women 18-49) over last year.  Duff Goldman's ACE OF CAKES Was the star of Tuesdays, posting the highest ratings for the night.

Wednesdays are down 2% in Households and 4% in the P25-54 demo (Down 15% in the P18-49 demo) against last year.  GOOD EATS was the most solid performer on Wednesdays with the 8 o'clock lead-off.  Only one week out of four showed any ratings build afterwards.

Thursdays are up 12% in Households and 16% in the P25-54 demo year-to-year.  Once again, ACE OF CAKES steals the show by delivering the highest ratings every week and always building from the IRON CHEF AMERICA lead-in.

Fridays are up 20% in Households, 26% in the P25-54 demo and 41% in the P18-49 demo (driven by an 80% increase in Men 18-49).  DINERS, DRIVE-INS & DINERS must get the guys attention on Friday nights.

Saturdays are the biggest night of growth, showing increase of 40% in Households, 61% in P18-49 and 45% in P25-54.  The FOOD NETWORK 4 PACK contains Stacks of the highest rated series and closed the month with a Halloween stunt that rated very well.

Sundays were down by 14% in Households and 13% in the P25-54 demo.  The Halloween themed OUTRAGEOUS PUMKINS Challenge special delivered a huge rating, 81% over the Sunday Prime Household average and 204% over the P25-54 average.  THE CHEF JEFF PROJECT did not fare so well, losing 35% in its Household and 43% in its P25-54 lead-in.
