Paris -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is to provide Italy’s Wind Telecomunicazioni with content delivery network technology to support the launch of new video and TV services for its fixed and mobile subscribers.
The provision of Alcatel-Lucent’s Velocix Content Delivery Network platform will enable Wind’s customers to manage video traffic on its network, providing an optimized experience for customers regardless of the device they use to access content.
With the delivery of video content rapidly moving from traditional ‘broadcasting’ to content delivered to individuals via a variety of screens and devices, Alcatel-Lucent’s industrial research arm Bell Labs estimates that online video consumption will have increased twelvefold by 2020, placing considerable strain on fixed and mobile networks. As such, the Velocix platform will provide Wind with the efficiency and agility to manage video traffic as its network grows to accommodate additional demand.
- This deployment helps position Wind as a key player in the distribution of video content in Italy, and will enable it to bring new services to market.
- Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its Velocix 7810 Digital Media Delivery Platform, the market leading on-net Content Delivery Network system, used by some of the largest operators in the world, including Telus, Oi and Time Warner Cable, among others
- With video the predominant traffic in any IP-based network infrastructure, Alcatel-Lucent’s unique understanding and expertise is enabling customers to add intelligence to their networks that improves the customer experience and unlocks revenue potential from new services.
Nicola Grassi, CTO at Wind, said: “Wind chose Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative CDN platform for future-proof video content delivery and to better address customers’ expectations, anywhere with any device, either fixed or mobile, smartphones, tablets, notebooks or smart TVs.”
Roberto Loiola, CEO and Managing Director of Alcatel-Lucent Italia said: “Our Velocix CDN platform puts service providers such as WIND in an ideal position to capitalize on growing consumer demand for high-quality video and rich media content delivered over both fixed and wireless broadband connections. It provides them all the tools they need to launch premium content services that generate new revenues, while lowering costs and providing supreme delivery performance. Furthermore, it equips them to offer content aggregators a truly reliable distribution and retail channel.”
