NEW YORK -- Demonstrating the range of its creative development and deeper dive into scripted content, Astronauts Wanted (a joint venture between Judy McGrath, former Chairperson/CEO of MTV Networks, and Sony Music Entertainment) has secured a deal with actress/writer/director Tammin Sursok (Pretty Little Liars) and writer/director Sean McEwen to develop and produce a new scripted comedy series entitled AUSSIE GIRL with Tammin’s production company Charlie Baby Productions. The studio has also optioned Young Adult novel THEHIDDEN MEMORY OFOBJECTS by author Danielle Mages Amato.
AUSSIE GIRL is loosely based on Tammin’s own unusual life circumstance, growing up a star in Australia, only to have to start all over again when she has to transition into the absurd culture of Hollywood. The story takes place at the exact moment when her career in Australia takes a wickedly-delicious-but-horrific turn for the worse and she is forced – tail between legs – to get the hell outta Dodge and try to make it in the selfie-obsessed world of Los Angeles. The result is a fish-out-of-water comedy in the vein of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt meets Inside Amy Schumer.
THE HIDDEN MEMORY OF OBJECTS, which will be released by Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins in March 2017, is about Megan, a young artist who uses her ability to see memories attached to objects to find out more about her brother’s death. With the help of an artifact detective who specializes in “murderabilia,” objects tainted by violence or the deaths of their owners, she uncovers troubling truths not only about her brother but also about corruption and social injustice in the nation’s capital.
Nick Shore, Chief Creative Strategist, Astronauts Wanted: “These two projects are a great demonstration of our drive towards premium scripted youth content. Both projects tap into the youth zeitgeist in fresh, unique ways. We're extremely excited to work with both Tammin and Danielle to bring these striking visions to the screen.”
AUSSIE GIRL is written and directed by Sean McEwen (And Punching the Clown, Bernie) and Tammin Sursok in collaboration with Cassidy Lunnen, Executive Producer. The project is overseen by Astronauts Wanted’s Nick Shore, Chief Creative Strategist and Kim Rosen, Head of Development. Tammin is represented by Michael Szewczyk at Grandview and Emma Lewis at Paradigm. Sean is represented by Brett Etre at Primary Wave.
THE HIDDEN MEMORY OF OBJECTS author Danielle Mages Amato is represented by Lana Popovic at literary agency Chalberg & Sussman; and Alice Lawson at literary and talent agency Gersh.
