New York, NY– This past October, legendary rapper and hip hop icon Nas was honored at the annual REVOLT Music Conference Gala. The program, entitled “2016 REVOLT MUSIC CONFERENCE HONORS NAS,” will be televised on REVOLT TV this Thanksgiving evening, Thursday, November 24th at 10:00pm ET/7:00pm PT (re-airing at 1:00am ET/ 10:00pm PT).
At the RMC Gala, REVOLT Chairman Sean “Diddy” Combs presented Nas with the 2016 Jimmy Iovine Icon Award, an award given to an industry leader who has had a lasting impact and unique influence on music. The gala closed out the three-day REVOLT Music Conference, which provided attendees with the opportunity to personally interact with leaders from both the music and technology industries during interactive panels, performances, exclusive networking events, pitch sessions, poolside parties, music experiences, and more.
The evening, hosted by actor and comedian Chris Spencer, also featured special performances by Kehlani (who performed her hit single “CRZY”) and Bibi Bourelly (who performed her new single “Ballin”), heartfelt speeches by Nas’ daughter Destiny Jones who made a surprise appearance, and his cousin, Black-ish star, Yara Shahidi who affectionately referred to Nas as her ‘cuzzo’.
“Nas was always fearless, always ready to go do something that nobody else would do to uplift his people in any way. He is the true example of black excellence," said REVOLT Chairman Sean Combs. “We celebrate him – not just for being an MC, not just for being a lyricist. It goes deeper than that. He cares about our people. He cares about his friends. He cares about his family. He cares about us as a whole and we love him for that. We love him for being one of the greatest MC’s in the world, but not just because he is one of the greatest MC’s. We love him for being him, Nasir Jones.”
“I’m honored beyond words, and honored to be here with you guys who started this REVOLT thing, which means rise up, which means change, which means rebel,” said Nas during his acceptance speech. “This is God’s plan. It’s only befitting that I should receive a REVOLT award. May the most high be pleased with every single Nat Turner that ever lived, with every soldier that ever fought for freedom for all people. REVOLT is a befitting name for all this.”
Additional attendees of note included Andre Harrell (REVOLT Vice Chairman), Nas’ longtime friends Steve Stoute, DMX, Busta Ryhmes, and more. The program also includes special congratulatory appearances from industry heavyweights Chris Rock, Usher, Pharrell Williams, and Russell Simmons.
