For all those diehard baseball fans, Dominican television network Telemicro Internacional has secured exclusive rights for the next four years to Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana Winter baseball competition. Starting off the new baseball pact in October, Telemicro will provide live coverage of the 2017-2018 season. The games will air Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. ET; Saturday at 4 p.m. ET and Sunday at 4 p.m. ET.
The Dominican Republic has established a reputation as a nation for breeding some of baseball’s best players and, as a result, has attracted a loyal and dedicated fan following both inside and outside the Island. Other than the U.S., the Dominican Republic has supplied the greatest number of MLB players in history including MVP Award winners Albert Pujols, Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Tejada and Sammy Sosa as well as Cy Young Award winning pitchers Bartolo Colon and Pedro Martinez.
Known as the gateway league to America’s MLB, the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana season features six teams, begins every October and then peaks with a round robin playoff in January. The winner advances to the Caribbean Series in February to compete against Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, and Venezuela.
Patrick Rivet, CEO of THEMA America, which represents Telemicro Internacional, noted that sports content is a significant driver in securing carriage agreements and attracting audiences.
“One way to distinguish a network is by its willingness to provide exclusive programming,” said Rivet. “By offering live broadcasts of the Dominican Republic’s popular winter baseball league games, Telemicro appeals to people with roots in the Dominican Republic as well as to baseball fans the world over. Telemicro’s sports coverage is indicative of the unique and high caliber content that identifies the network.”
As a distinctive Spanish-language entertainment channel, Telemicro Internacional strives to be relevant for Dominican audiences outside the Island. As such, the channel’s signature programming emanates from its coverage of the 2017 Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana, the world’s best Winter Baseball League according to sports aficionados. Spread across the Dominican Republic, the teams include Aguilas Cibaeñas, Estrellas Orientales, Gigantes del Cibao, Leones del Escogido, Tigres del Licey and Toros del Este.
Although baseball season runs from October to January, Telemicro Internacional will continue to offer year-round entertainment programming including shows with Dominican comedians and talent who are well known in the Dominican Republic and in heavy concentrated Dominican communities in the U.S. This includes Miguel Céspedes and Raymond Pozo on "A reír con Miguel y Raymond", Fausto Mata on "Boca de Piano es un Show", Ramón Pastrano host of "Formalmente Informal", Gianni Paulino, and José Miguel Soto Jiménez, among others.
